So many things draw visitors to Fresno County. From breweries to outdoor spaces, incredible dining to cultural attractions, there’s a lot to see or do. The area is known for having about 300 sunny days each year, making it the perfect place to get outside and enjoy nature.
When you visit, have you stopped to think about what you’d do if you need medical care during your trip? There’s a lot that can go wrong, and there’s no way to plan for it. You fell while hiking in Yosemite. While eating seafood or undercooked meat, you end up with food poisoning. Or, you have an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Reduce stress by having a plan before you travel.
Top Tourist Destinations in Fresno
Fresno is the fifth-largest city in California, and there’s a lot for tourists to see and do. It’s a historic city that was founded in 1872 by the Central Pacific Railroad. Its proximity to King’s Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park, and several others makes it a top spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
When you travel to Fresno, we recommend hitting these top destinations first. They’re not a comprehensive list of our favorite spots, but it’s a good start. We hope nothing goes wrong during your stay, but there’s a Premium Urgent Care within easy reach thanks to our multiple locations.
Must-Visit Spots in Fresno
When you come to Fresno, there is a lot to do and see. We recommend these to get you started.
1. Forestiere Underground Gardens
In 1901, Baldassare Forestiere arrived in America with dreams of becoming a citrus farmer. Once he reached Fresno, he began to build an underground garden of citrus trees, grape vines, grottos, and patios to remind him of home. The gardens became a historic landmark in 1979 and are a popular attraction for visitors.
The tours take about an hour and require you to walk on uneven terrain and stairs at times, which can be a tripping hazard. If you do fall and strain or sprain a wrist or ankle, nearby urgent care practices ensure you’re treated and back having fun as quickly as possible.
2. Fresno Chaffee Zoo
All ages love viewing wildlife up close in a zoo. Fresno’s zoo is dedicated to animal conservation and has 10 habitats where animals live. It’s a safe, family-friendly attraction with animals like giraffes and goats that you can feed or pet.
3. Fresno County Blossom Trail
The Blossom Trail is a scenic drive or bike tour through Fresno County. It takes place each year in February through April, typically. The roadways are lined with flowering orchards where fruit and nut trees blossom in a burst of color.
As this is a self-guided tour, the risk of injury is minimal. But bicyclists have been known to fall and get scrapes and bruises that urgent care can help with. As the flowers draw bees, there is also the risk of getting stung if a bee gets too close.
4. National Parks
We cannot narrow it down to just one national park to visit. Three major parks are within 90 minutes of Fresno and are worth the drive.
- Kings Canyon National Park: This expansive park and Sequoia National Park are linked, but Kings Canyon is to the north. It’s a glacier-carved valley with waterfalls, streams, and lakes to explore. Plus, you might spot some bighorn sheep, mountain lions, or mule deer during your hikes through the forests and meadows.
- Sequoia National Park: Visit the forests to see the largest trees in the world up close. The General Sherman Tree is the largest, and it’s an easy hike to view it from the fenced area. While you’re in Sequoia National Park, walk the trails and view the wildlife along the way. The forests are home to animals ranging from bobcats and gray foxes to pocket gophers and yellow-bellied marmots.
- Yosemite National Park: This park covers about 1,200 miles and has some of the world’s most famous waterfalls, including the 2,245-foot-high Yosemite Falls and the smaller Bridalveil Fall. It became protected land in 1864 and offers more than 750 hiking trails, fishing, horseback riding, and routes for sightseeing by car.
Because you spend time outside in all these national parks, there’s always a chance you could trip and fall, cut your knee on rocks, fracture or sprain an ankle, or be bitten or stung by an animal or insect. That’s why it’s a good idea to know where the nearest Premium Urgent Care is.
5. Shinzen Japanese Friendship Garden
Shinzen is an expansive collection of Japanese gardens off the shores of Woodward Lake. It’s completely self-guided or can be led by a docent if you prefer. Highlights include:
- Double Moon Bridge over the koi pond
- The Clark Bonsai Collection, with more than 100 bonsai
- The Tea Garden and Japanese Ceremonial Tea House
- The Ume (Japanese apricot) Grove
If possible, come when there is a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony and embrace the Japanese culture as matcha is prepared and served to attendees.
6. Tower District
Streetcars once navigated the historic Tower District, but times have changed. The 1930s historic details and art deco flair are still visible today. It’s the entertainment venues and restaurants that draw people to this historic district. Some of the highlights include:
- Fresno Film Festival
- Heirloom (Fresno County is home to 1.88 million acres of farmland. Heirloom celebrates that with farm-to-table meals.)
- Rogue Festival (A six-day celebration of comedy, dance, music, performance art, and more.)
- The Tower District Farmers Market
